“Life is different in a town that can draw a rodeo crowd as large as its population,” writes Erik Stenbakken in the September/October 2005 issue of Nebraska Life . “Because tradition runs strong in this part of the country, and because they ride rodeo today in much the same way as they did a century ago, I decided to photograph it that way too: leather-bellows camera made of wood and brass, and the photographer hidden beneath a black cloth.”

Photo selection for this feature wasn't easy. Though we've devoted seven pages (plus our cover!) to Erik's stunning black-and-white photography (and the stories behind the photos), we had to leave out many wonderful images. Here, as a web-only feature, is a slide show of more photos from the “Great Plains Rodeo Collection,” shot at Nebraska small town rodeos over the past three years. Navigate the slide show like a VCR or DVD player. Hover the pointer over each photo to see the title.

Erik Stenbakken lives in Greeley, Colo. Photographs in this collection are available as limited edition carbon prints. For more information, contact the photographer at (970) 330-4463, www.stenbakken.com
