September/October 2017

Sara Alexander

From the psychedelic Omaha paint scheme on our front cover to the fiery red sumac toward the back of the magazine, our September/October 2017 issue is packed with vivid storytelling and brilliant photography showcasing the beating heart of everything good about living the Good Life in Nebraska. Here is a little taste of what you will discover inside:

Travelers traversing southern Nebraska via Highway 136, also known as the Heritage Highway, find beauty in every mile. Our story, “Fall Colors on the Heritage Highway,” is a photographically beautiful road trip through communities large and small along the nearly 240-mile scenic byway. Then we travel back in time 80 years to when two Boone County lawmen were murdered in the Sandhills. This reprint of a story we printed in 2005 is updated with new photography and new hot leads which could result in the eight decade-old cold case finally being solved. On the western edge of the Sandhills we tour the community of Oshkosh, known far and wide as Nebraska’s Goose Hunting Capital. This same issue includes the fifth installment of our Nebraska 150 Retrospective. The story focuses on the years 1967 to 1992 and will surprise with little known facts while inspiring Nebraska pride. In Bellwood we meet Aaron Rerucha and family members who help him learn his path into woodworking using his late grandfather’s seasoned tools. Using rustic lumber most other woodworkers would discard, the Reruchas accentuate the quirks of each piece while pioneering their way through life on the historic Oxbow Trail.

Plus: Venture with us to Memorial Stadium in Lincoln where we uncover superstitious Cornhusker football traditions. Take a look at Stanton’s pumpkin trail, get the unclassified details on Nebraska’s aerial role in winning the Cold War and turn your gaze toward the mule deer in our In The Wild department. Test your knowledge of agricultural trivia and then discover delectable coffeeless coffeecakes in Nebraska Kitchens. We feature do-it-yourself treasures in our Nebraska Products segment, and meet painters and poets in Writers & Artists. And don’t forget to plan your own adventures with our Nebraska Traveler stories and calendar of statewide events. You will find all of this and more in the September/October issue of Nebraska Life.
